With the 1965 showing of Nissan's latest design receiving poor reviews in the US auto shows, they had to do something. Mr. "K" Katayama, President of Nissan Motors USA, gathered input and headed to the R & D Department in Japan.

Designer Yoshihiko Matsuo believed his team could meet the requirements to compete in the export market and was assigned the task 'Design Project Z'.
